How to compare internet providers
Comparing providers is about more than the headline price. Use the same checklist for each option at your address:
- Monthly price now and after any promotion ends.
- Download and upload speeds — and whether they are 'up to' figures.
- Connection type: fiber, cable, fixed wireless/5G, DSL or satellite.
- Contract length and early termination fees.
- Data caps and overage charges.
- Equipment rental, installation and activation fees.
- Customer support hours and options.
Questions to ask each provider
- What is the total monthly cost including taxes, fees and equipment?
- What is the price after month 12 or 24?
- Is there a price guarantee?
- What is the typical install time at my address?
- Can I use my own modem or router?
- What happens if service at my address doesn't meet the advertised speed?
Understanding speed claims
Providers usually advertise maximum speeds. Real speeds depend on your plan, wiring, Wi-Fi equipment, distance from the router and how busy the network is. Many providers publish broadband 'labels' that summarize typical speeds, prices and fees in a standard format — look for these on provider websites, as they make side-by-side comparison easier.
Wi-Fi is often the bottleneck. If your speed test is fast with a wired connection but slow on Wi-Fi, a better router or mesh system may help more than an upgraded plan.
Matching a plan to your household
- 1–2 people, browsing and streaming: an entry or mid-tier plan is often fine.
- Remote workers: prioritize reliability and upload speed.
- Gamers: low latency matters more than raw speed — fiber and cable usually perform best.
- Rural addresses: compare fixed wireless, 5G home internet and satellite; availability can differ house to house.
Switching without a gap in service
Schedule your new service's installation before cancelling the old one. Return rented equipment and keep the receipt or tracking number so you aren't billed for it. Check your final bill for prorated charges. If you are porting a home phone number bundled with internet, ask the new provider to start the port before you cancel, so the number isn't released.
How SmartSave Hub works
SmartSave Hub is an independent information and referral website. We write general guides to help you understand your options, and we link to or connect you with third-party companies that provide the actual products or services. We do not perform services, make loans, sell insurance or set prices.
We may be paid by partners when you click a link, submit a request or place a call through this site. That compensation can affect which partners appear, but it does not change the general guidance on this page. We do not list every company or offer available, so we encourage you to compare options independently, read each provider's terms and ask questions before you commit to anything.

SmartSave Hub is an independent comparison and information site. We are not affiliated with any provider unless stated.
Is this free?
Yes, using this page is free. We may earn a commission from partners.
Are savings guaranteed?
No. Savings vary and are not guaranteed.
Why do providers differ by address?
Networks are built street by street, so availability can vary even between neighbors.
What is latency?
The delay before data starts moving. Lower latency matters for gaming and video calls.
Is 5G home internet reliable?
It can be, but performance depends on signal strength and network load at your location.
Should I buy my own router?
It can save rental fees and improve Wi-Fi. Confirm compatibility with the provider.
