How personal loans work
This is general information, not financial advice. Rates, fees and eligibility vary by provider and by your situation. A personal loan is usually an unsecured installment loan: you borrow a fixed amount and repay it in fixed monthly payments over a set term, commonly two to seven years. People use them for debt consolidation, home repairs, medical bills or large purchases. Approval, APR, loan amount and term are set by each lender based on your credit, income and other factors.
What to compare
- APR (annual percentage rate): includes interest plus certain fees — the best single number to compare.
- Origination fee: some lenders deduct a fee from the loan amount, so you receive less than you borrow.
- Term: longer terms lower the monthly payment but usually increase total interest.
- Total cost: monthly payment × number of payments, plus fees.
- Prepayment penalties: check whether you can pay off early without a fee.
- Late fees and how payment dates work.
Representative example (illustrative only)
Example for illustration only, not an offer: borrowing $10,000 over 36 months at a 15% APR with no origination fee would mean monthly payments of roughly $347 and total repayment of roughly $12,480. Your actual APR, fees and terms will differ and depend on the lender and your credit profile.
Prequalification vs. applying
Many lenders offer prequalification, which often uses a soft credit inquiry that doesn't affect your score. A full application usually involves a hard inquiry, which can lower your score slightly for a time. Confirm with each lender which type of check it uses.
Is a personal loan the right choice?
- For consolidation, it helps only if the new APR and fees are lower than your current debts — and you avoid running balances back up.
- For emergencies, compare with alternatives like a payment plan with the provider, a credit union loan or a 0% promotional card you can pay off in time.
- Avoid loans with APRs you can't comfortably afford. Be cautious with very high-cost short-term loans.
Warning signs of a scam: a lender guaranteeing approval regardless of credit, asking for upfront fees before funding, or asking for payment by gift card or wire transfer.
Improving your chances
- Check your credit reports for errors through the official free annual credit report site.
- Lower your debt-to-income ratio where possible.
- Borrow only what you need.
- Consider a creditworthy co-borrower if the lender allows it.
How SmartSave Hub works
SmartSave Hub is an independent information and referral website. We write general guides to help you understand your options, and we link to or connect you with third-party companies that provide the actual products or services. We do not perform services, make loans, sell insurance or set prices.
We may be paid by partners when you click a link, submit a request or place a call through this site. That compensation can affect which partners appear, but it does not change the general guidance on this page. We do not list every company or offer available, so we encourage you to compare options independently, read each provider's terms and ask questions before you commit to anything.
